Rivermen win Presidents Cup opener over Muskies

The Six Nations Rivermen took care of business in their opening match at the Presidents Cup. The Rivermen, one of seven clubs participating at the national Senior B men’s lacrosse tournament in Edmonton, downed the Snake Island Muskies 11-3 on Sunday.

The Six Nations club advanced to the Canadian tournament by winning its Ontario Series Lacrosse title earlier this month. The Muskies, who are from Akwesasne, Ontario, received an automatic berth into the nationals as they are the only squad from the Three Nations Senior Lacrosse League that had a 2022 season.

Tyler Brown and Travis Longboat led the Rivermen offence on Sunday. Brown scored four goals, all of them on the powerplay, while Longboat netted a pair of goals and was also credited with three assists. Justin Martin, Rodd Squire, Wes Whitlow, Daylen Hill and Brooker Muir also scored for the Rivermen, who led throughout the contest.

Six Nations had a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission. And the Rivermen took control of the match in the middle frame, outscoring the Muskies 6-1, to enjoy a 9-1 advantage heading into the final 20 minutes of action.

The Presidents Cup will be a grueling week for all competing clubs, who will play six round-robin matches in five days. The top four finishers will then advance to semi-final action. All tournament games will be staged at the Bill Hunter Arena in Edmonton.

The Rivermen will square off against British Columbia’s Ladner Pioneers on Monday. The opening faceoff for that contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. EST.
