Braydon Hickey’s lacrosse journey has taken him from Orillia to NCAA competition in North Carolina and back to senior box lacrosse in Ontario. With the Collingwood Cruise, he has provided scoring, playmaking and important contributions in closely contested games.

His 2026 playoff performance against Owen Sound offered a good example. With Collingwood facing elimination, Hickey scored twice and earned first-star honours as the Cruise won 7–6 to force a deciding third game.

Early Years

Hickey developed through Orillia’s lacrosse system, gaining experience in both box and field before continuing with the Junior B Kings.

In his recruiting profile, he described how playing against bigger opponents encouraged him to work harder and make smarter decisions. He also emphasized teamwork and helping his teammates succeed—an approach that accompanied his ambition to play college lacrosse.

His junior development included guidance from coaches Marty Groves, former NLL goaltender Rob Blasdell and Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame member Jim Meredith. Hickey credited the lessons he learned from those coaches with helping prepare him for the next level.

Climbing The Ladder

Hickey’s pursuit of a college opportunity took him to the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina.

After learning about the program through a friend, he contacted the coaching staff and eventually earned an opportunity to compete in NCAA Division II. His first season in 2019 produced five goals and four assists in nine games.

He continued developing with the Trojans, playing at attack and midfield during his college career. In 2022, Hickey earned Second Team All-Conference Carolinas recognition as a midfielder. The conference’s season statistics credit him with 15 goals and 16 assists for 31 points in 16 appearances.

His time at Mount Olive also brought repeated Conference Carolinas Presidential Honor Roll recognition, adding academic accomplishments to his contributions on the field.

Making His Mark In The OSL

Hickey’s senior box experience includes the Clearview Crushers and Collingwood Cruise. With Collingwood, he has become an important part of the offence.

In July 2025, he scored three times in a 7–4 victory over Owen Sound. In a low-scoring contest, Hickey and Colin Matthews supplied five of Collingwood’s seven goals as the Cruise established a second-period lead and held on for the win.

His ability to contribute in important games was evident again during the 2026 playoffs.

Trailing Owen Sound 2–1 after the first period of Game 2, Collingwood responded with six second-period goals. Hickey scored unassisted off a turnover to give the Cruise a 3–2 lead, then added another late in the period as Collingwood built a 7–4 advantage.

Owen Sound rallied in the third, but the Cruise held on for a 7–6 victory. Hickey’s two-goal performance earned him first-star recognition and helped extend the series.

Arena Lacrosse League

Hickey’s indoor experience also includes the Oshawa Outlaws in the Arena Lacrosse League.

During a 2025–26 meeting with the Toronto Monarchs, he contributed a second-quarter goal as Oshawa recovered from a brief deficit and established a 7–5 halftime lead. The Outlaws went on to win 19–12.

That experience adds another competitive indoor environment to a background that includes junior box, senior box and NCAA field lacrosse.

International Experience

Hickey is also listed among the Canadian Lacrosse League’s Canadian alumni from the 2016 World Junior Lacrosse Championship.

The appearance added international tournament experience to his development before his move into college lacrosse and the senior game.

Beyond The Floor

Hickey’s college career included recognition for his work in the classroom. Mount Olive lists Presidential Honor Roll selections across several terms, reflecting the academic commitment that accompanied his playing responsibilities.

His athletic background also includes football and hockey. In his recruiting profile, Hickey identified experience in both sports alongside his box and field lacrosse development.

Gary Groob’s Take

What stands out about Braydon Hickey is his ability to make an important offensive contribution when goals are difficult to come by. His hat trick in a 7–4 win and two-goal performance in a one-goal playoff victory are good examples.

His background includes college recognition, international tournament experience and continued competition in senior box lacrosse. Those experiences have given him different opportunities to develop his game.

For Collingwood, Hickey provides another scoring option and a player capable of delivering in important moments. His story is another worth sharing through Stars of OSL.
