Merchants Win Convincingly To End Round Robin


The Brooklin Merchants (3-0) faced the Winnipeg Blizzard (0-3) in day three action at the President's Cup on Tuesday night. 

The goaltending match-up had Lukas Coote in net for the Merchants facing Ryan Smith in net for Winnipeg. 

Winnipeg played a spirited first period jumping out to 2-0 and 3-1 leads.  Brooklin kept pushing scoring three quick unanswered goals to grab a 4-3 lead at the break.

The Merchants took over the game in the second period, controlling the tempo and flow of the game.  Darren Elliott and Kellen Pulera added to the first period lead early on, setting the tone.  Brooklin would go on to score seven goals in the period to take a stranglehold on the game. 

The third period had Brooklin play keep away for the majority of the period, but to Winnipeg's credit they played tough the entire game.  Brooklin came away the 14-9 win.

To The Game:

The Blizzard started quickly with a goal from Jared Courchene unassisted at 2:07, followed by Zach Laberge with a blast off an Alex La Ronde feed at 3:38.

Brooklin answered back with a power-play goal from Zac Carrigan off a Parker Pipher feed at 6:02, but on the power-play Jared Courchene scored again from in close off an Anthony Melito feed at 16:26.

Cole Tucker brought Brooklin within one with a sidearm snipe off an Eddie Renaud pass at 16:49, followed by a bounced shot from Cole Tucker off a Liam Osborne pass at 18:22.  Liam Osborne then added a beauty off an Alexis Simard feed 0:17 seconds later.

After one period, Brooklin 4 Winnipeg 3.

Second Period:

Brooklin started quickly in the second period with Darren Elliott scoring just 0:11 seconds into the frame off a Jacob Hickey pass, followed by Kellen Pulera with a great individual effort from in front off a Devon Pipher pass at 3:42.

Brooklin increased the lead with a low to low shot from Zac Carrigan off a Darren Elliott feed at 8:20, followed by Parker Pipher wirh a sidearm snipe off a Darren Elliott feed at 9:55.

Brooklin continued the barrage on the power-play off an Eddie Renaud goal from the outside off a Devon Pipher pass at 11:06, followed by a shorthanded goal from Devon Pipher off a Darren Elliott pass at 16:40.

Ethan Baniuk finally got the Blizzard on the board unassisted at 18:11, but Liam Osborne answered back with a blast off an Adam Perroni pass 0:09 seconds later.

After two periods, Brooklin 11 Winnipeg 4.

Third Period:

Brooklin opened the third period scoring with Devon Pipher converting a Parker Pipher feed at 6:24, followed by Kellen Pulera with a blast off a Darren Elliott pass at 8:39.  Devon Pipher then added a power-play marker off a Parker Pipher pass from the side of the net at 11:25.

Winnipeg finally got back on the board with a pair from Michael Newman.  The first was off an Alex De La Ronde pass at 11:59, followed by a low to low laser to the corner off a Kieran Mulvaney pass at 13:05.  

The Blizzard then added late goals from Alex De La Ronde on the power-play off a Colin Poitras pass at 18:48, followed by Zach Laberge at 19:45, but it was too deep a hole to dig out from.

Final score, Brooklin 14 Winnipeg 9.
