Last Minute Goal Sends Owen Sound To Victory
The Owen Sound North Stars (3-1) visited the Collingwood Cruise (0-2) in Ontario Series Lacrosse action Saturday night at the Meaford St Vincent Community Centre in Meaford, Ontario.
The goaltending match-up had Gavin Clarke in net for Owen Sound facing Jackson Hainer in net for the Cruise.
A game in which it looked to be a shootout, turned into a defensive gem as the game wore on. Seven power-play goals in the first period (4 for Owen Sound, 3 for Collingwood) was a big reason we were tied 5-5 after one.
The story unfolding was Angus Rawding scoring four goals in two periods for Collingwood, but left with an undisclosed injury after two.
With just 2:37 left in the third period, Braydon Hickey tied the game for the Cruise. The game looked to be heading to overtime when Dawson Mckenzie converted a Jordan Caskenette pass with just 0:57 seconds left for the North Stars game winner. Final score, 8-7 for Owen Sound.
Of note, both Gavin Clarke and Jackson Hainer were superb in their respective nets, giving both their teams chances to win.
To The Game:
In a penalty filled first period, the Owen Sound North Stars took the early lead on the power-play when Rob Harris blasted a Jake McNabb pass from in close at 6:07. Cole Hanrahan evened the score with a laser from the side off a Graham Bergsma pass at 6:22.
Angus Rawding gave Collingwood the lead on the power-play with a low to low shot off a Bergsma pass at 9:37, but Jake McNabb evened the game on the power-play converting a Dawson Mckenzie pass at 13:34.
Angus Rawding scored his second of the period in transition off a long lead pass from Jackson Hainer to re-gain Collingwood's lead at 14:10, followed by Chase Forsythe, his first goal in Senior B, with a beautiful finish off a Cole Hanrahan pass 0:32 seconds later.
Jake McNabb's tally off a Brody Caskenette pass at 15:46 got Owen Sound within one, but Rawding added a power-play goal off a Chase Forsythe pass at 16:01 to regain the two goal lead.
The North Stars finished the period strong capitalizing twice. Jordan Caskenette scored unassisted at 18:35, followed by Rob Harris with a laser with only 0:03 seconds left in the period to tie this see-saw affair once more.
After one period, Owen Sound 5 Collingwood 5.
Second Quarter:
In a more defensive period, Dawson Mckenzie found the back of the net twice, both on the power-play. The first was off a Brody Caskenette pass at 7:20, followed by a quick stick giving the North Stars a two goal lead at 12:15.
Angus Rawding continued his big night with his fifth of the game off a Graham Bergsma feed at 17:18, to bring the game within one once again.
After two periods, Owen Sound 7 Collingwood 6.
Third Period:
A scoreless period until there was only 2:37 left when Brayden Hickey converted a Cole Hanrahan pass to tie the game once again.
The game looked destined for overtime, but a late goal from Dawson Mckenzie off a Jordan Caskenette pass gave Owen Sound the victory.
Final score, Owen Sound 8 Collingwood 7.
